Plant Care Information
Here is all you need to know about caring for Protea
Protea, Banksia, & Leucadendron care will be generally the same. Although both are from different areas.
Plant Pincushions/Protea in a full sun, or partly shaded areas or location, giving it room for good air circulation, and growth. I also recommend giving them about 4' feet of space from other plants for full display, and uniformity.
Pincushion's do not like wet feet, meaning keep your plants moist, but not wet, 1-2 watering times a week should be fine, unless it's a really hot day, then a little extra water won't hurt - If the soil is well drained.
These beauties are drought tolerant "Once Established". So, for the first 6-12 months just keep them happy, meaning water plants according to your location. Plants should be moist, and not in a soggy pot, or clay soil.
Please also check your planting zone, these do best in Zone's 9-11. They're also nontoxic to dogs & cats. Plants are good down to 29 degrees farenheight.
Pincushion Protea's need a desert mix soil, and no fertilizer, but the micronutrients in worm casting help establish a strong root system.
Whether you're planting your protea in pots or in the ground just remember, drainage, drainage, drainage, is the key, your pots should have lots of holes, not just one.
